Our History: Timeline

  • December 27, 1911 — Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union was founded as a small cooperative credit society to encourage frugality and economic self-sufficiency among Lowell, Massachusetts’ tight-knit, Franco-American population.
  • February 12, 1912 — Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union receives its certificate of incorporation and establishes its office at 725 Merrimack Street.
  • 1912 — Ephrem Pelletier named as President.
  • 1918 — Establishes a new office in a nearby tenement block at the corner of Cabot and Merrimack Street.
  • 1923 — Office becomes too small, Credit Union moves to 751 Merrimack Street.
  • 1931 — Louis N. Milot becomes the Credit Union’s second President.
  • 1936 — Credit Union moves to 738 Merrimack Street at the corner of Decatur Street.
  • 1947 — Credit Union moves to new building at 666 Merrimack Street.
  • 1956 — Homer W. Bourgeois becomes the Credit Union’s third President.
  • 1977 — Léon A. Lavallée becomes the Credit Union’s fourth President.
  • 1987 — Lucille M. Sullivan becomes the Credit Union’s fifth President and Chief Executive Officer.
  • 1990 — Paul R. Mayotte becomes the Credit Union’s sixth President and Chief Executive Officer.
  • 1991 — Credit Union purchases 630 Merrimack Street located next door to its office.
  • April 1997 — First branch opens at 1345 Lakeview Avenue in Dracut, MA.
  • September 1997 — First high school branch opens at Dracut High School.
  • November 2000 — Second high school branch opens at Nashoba Valley Technical High School in Westford, MA.
  • July 2001 — The Credit Union website, JDCU.com, is launched.
  • September 2001 — Second branch opens at 150 Westford Road (Flint’s Corner), Tyngsborough, MA.
  • September 2003 — Third branch and loan center open at 239—245 Chelmsford Street, Chelmsford, MA.
  • November 2003 — Third high school branch opens at Lowell High School.
  • August 2007 — Mark S. Cochran becomes the Credit Union’s seventh President and Chief Executive Officer.
  • November 2007 — Fourth branch opens at 380 Merrimack Street, Methuen, MA.
  • June 2008 — Fifth branch opens at 1595 Bridge Street, Dracut, MA.
  • September 2008 — The Board of Directors of Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union recently announced that Ellen Murphy Meehan joined the Board. Ellen Murphy Meehan is a health care consultant. She is the central force in the Massachusetts Alliance of Safety Net Hospitals with whom she has worked for more than five years.
  • January 2009 — The Credit Union re-brands itself with a new logo and tag line, “we share a common thread.”
  • August 2009 — The Credit Union moves into a new state-of-the-art corporate headquarters located at 1 Tremont Place, Lowell, MA.
  • March 2010 — Fourth high school branch opens at Methuen High School.
  • November 2010 — The Board of Directors of Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union recently announced that Naomi Prendergast joined the Board. Naomi Prendergast is the President and Chief Executive Officer of D’Youville Senior Care, Inc. in Lowell, MA.
  • December 2010 — The Credit Union launches a new website, MoneyStrong.org.
  • January 2011 — Credit Union purchases 585—597 Merrimack Street from Lowell Community Health Center to build a new Lowell Branch Office.
  • March 2011 — New community-focused website, WeShareACommonThread.org, is launched.
  • March 2011 — Credit Union holds it’s first We Share A Common Thread Fundraiser at the Lowell Lodge of Elks and raises more than $20,000 for local charities.
  • April 2011 — First MoneyStrong for Life Fair is held at the Tsongas Center at UMass Lowell with 150 Lowell High School Seniors in attendance.
  • September 2011 — Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union headquarters is toured by a Delegation from Liverpool, England.
  • December 2011 — Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union hosts the Stanley Cup for employees, members and community.
  • January 2012 — Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union and Digital Federal Credit Union team up and donate $10,000 to the Lowell Transitional Living Center.
  • January 2012 — Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union announces its first MoneyStrong for Life Challenge by which four families will compete to reduce their debt, increase their credit score and savings. The winning family will win $7,500.00 and the other three families will each win $1,500.00.
  • February 13, 2012 — Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union Celebrates its 100th Anniversary! A new 100th Anniversary logo is revealed and an all day Member Celebration takes place at all branches. Plus the Credit Union gives away $100.00 a day for 100 days to randomly chosen members.
  • April 2012 — Employees of Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union performed a Random Act of Kindness by handing out free T-shirts and $5.00 Dunkin Donuts gift cards at Dunkin Donuts on Lakeview Avenue in Dracut.
  • April 2012 — The Board of Directors of Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union elects Susan Green to its Board. Susan Green is the Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer of Lowell General Hospital in Lowell, MA, since 2009 and had practiced as a Certified Public Accountant at Mullen and Company and Deloitte & Touche, LLP.
  • May 2012 — 103 friends, family members, and employees of Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union rallied together in support of Lowell General Hospital’s TeamWalk for Cancer Care.
  • June 2012 — A free concert, sponsored by the Credit Union in celebration of our 100th anniversary, attracted an estimated 600 people to Boarding House Park in downtown Lowell. The French-Canadian folk trio, Genticorum, had concert-goers clapping, singing, and dancing on the grassy venue.
  • June 2012 — The Lowell Spinners, Class A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, announced Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union as the title sponsor of the 2012 Lowell Spinners season as part of celebrating the credit union’s 100th anniversary.
  • September 2012 — Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union was visited by a delegation of 25 Credit Union professionals from the National Association for Cooperative Education from the Dominican Republic. Part of the World Council of Credit Unions global trade association, the group was representing eight credit unions from different regions of the island.
  • October 2012 — Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union teams up with the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts, who are also Celebrating their 100th Anniversary, to host a Financial Literacy Program.
  • November 2012 — Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union sponsored, in conjunction with the National Financial Educators Council, a visit by New England Patriots’ wide receiver Brandon Lloyd to Lowell High School.
  • November 2012 — Mark S. Cochran, President and Chief Executive Officer of Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union, served as Grand Marshal of the Lowell City of Lights holiday parade, helping to welcome thousands of celebration attendees to the bustling downtown.
  • December 2012 — Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union hits the $1 Billion asset mark, making it one of the largest Credit Unions in Massachusetts.
  • January 2013 — Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union announces that it has signed a three-year agreement with the Lowell Festival Foundation to be the premier sponsor of the Lowell Summer Music Series, which is presented with the Lowell National Historical Park.
  • February 2013 — Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union earns an overall rating of “Outstanding” from the state’s Division of Banks following its 2012 Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) review.
  • March 2013 — Following 36 years of dedicated service to Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union as a member of the Board of Directors, Leon Bedard announced his retirement.
  • March 2013 — The “We Share A Common Thread” fundraiser hosted by Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union to benefit the We Share A Common Thread Foundation raises more than $30,000 to support numerous worthy local causes.
  • April 2013 — A delegation of eight Credit Union professionals from the Bahamas visited Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union to learn more about the ways in which Jeanne D’Arc provides financial education to members and to those living and working throughout the region.
  • May 2013 — Dorcas Grigg-Saito, Chief Executive Officer of the Lowell Community Health Center, was elected to Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union’s Board of Directors.
  • May 2014 — Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union opens its ninth branch at 196 Littleton Road in Westford. The 2,500-square-foot, state-of-the-art, branch enhances the Credit Union’s ability to serve existing members and offer a competitive, alternative banking solution to area residents.
  • June 2014 — A new main branch office opens at 581 Merrimack Street in Lowell, replacing the former Merrimack Street branch and loan center. The 15,000-square-feet, three-story branch holds both the Lowell branch and a residential and commercial loan center.
  • June 2014 — Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union announces its sponsorship of the “Football for You” free, one-day football and leadership clinic, coached by New England Patriots Alumni players, for Lowell boys and girls, ages 11-14.
  • June 2014 — A new mortgage center opens at 315 Main Street in North Reading as part of the expansion of Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union’s Mortgage Lending Division. The 1,120-square-foot, second-floor mortgage center increases convenience for members.
  • August 2014 — Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union joins the Little Free Library movement and sponsors two Little Free Libraries in Lowell.
  • October 2014 — The Board of Directors of Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union elects Mark E. Dionne, Tax Partner at Pricewaterhouse Coopers, and Joanne Yestramski, Vice Chancellor for Finance and Operations at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, to its Board.
  • January 2015 — The “We Share A Common Thread” fundraiser hosted by Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union to benefit the We Share A Common Thread Foundation raises more than $42,000 to support numerous worthy local causes.
  • April 2015 — Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union continues its partnership with Lowell Summer Music Series by signing a five-year agreement with the Lowell Festival Foundation to be the premier sponsor of the Lowell Summer Music Series.
  • May 2015 — Mark S. Cochran President and CEO and Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union are honored by Community Teamwork with the Outstanding Leadership Award at their 50th Anniversary Celebration.
  • June 2015 — Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union donates $50,000 to America’s Credit Union Museum based in Manchester, N.H, the birthplace of American credit unions.
  • June 2015 — Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union reaches a milestone—70,000 members.
  • September 2015 — Mark S. Cochran President and CEO of Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union is honored by the Merrimack Valley Food Bank at their 22nd Annual Golf Tournament.
  • December 2015 — Jeanne D’Arc donates the generator from their former Lowell location at 658 Merrimack Street to help power a corn flour sifting factory in Nairobi, Kenya.
  • February 2016 — After serving 41 years on the Board of Directors at Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union, Richard P. Viau, Chairman of the Board retires.
  • February 2016 — Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union is the first Massachusetts credit union to apply and be accepted by the interstate branching bill, passed on October 1, 2015. The Credit Union announces its plans to expand into New Hampshire by opening a Branch that will be located in Nashua, NH in Tara Commons at 102 Spit Brook Road.
  • March 2016 — Renovations to our existing Chelmsford Branch begin with the demolition of our existing building located at 239 Chelmsford Street. This changes will increase parking to 43 total spaces, a better traffic flow in and out of the parking lot, a Walk-up ATM and Updated branch design.
  • April 2016 — Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union holds its groundbreaking ceremony on April 4, 2016 at its new Nashua NH Branch located at Tara Commons at 102 Spit Brook Road.
  • April 2016 — George C. Eliades, Jr. is voted as the new Chairman of the Board of Directors of Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union. Mr. Eliades has been a Board Member since 1988, and has served six years as Vice Chairman.
  • April 2016 — Dorcas Grigg-Saito announced her retirement from the Board of Directors following three years of dedicated service to Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union.
  • May 2016 — The Credit Union launches their new blog, The Money Mill. The blog extends Jeanne D’Arc’s mission to help people make smart financial choices to people all over the world. It contains fun, interesting and informative articles about finances and more.
  • August 2016 — Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union partners with Mill City Grows to offer “The Acre Market,” located at the Credit Union’s former Lowell Branch.
  • August 2016 — Extensive renovations to our Chelmsford Branch are complete. The exterior has a new look as well as increased parking and walk-up ATM. The interior sports a new fresh design with a better banking experience for our members.
  • September 2016 — Our first New Hampshire Branch opens at 102 Spit Brook Road in Tara Commons making it our 10th branch office.
  • September 2016 — The Credit Union reaches a milestone of $1 billion in loans.
  • September 2016 — The entire Credit Union family, along with the Greater Lowell community, mourns the loss of Steve Jones, Vice-President of Community Development, who passed away unexpectedly on September 29th.
  • September 2016 — Mark Cochran, President and CEO of Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union announces the establishment of the Steve Jones Legacy Fund. This fund is to honor his memory and legacy. The earnings from the fund will annually be distributed to the non-profits that Steve was passionate about.
  • December 2016 — Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union commemorates Lowell’s famous photographer, George Poirier (“George of Lowell”) by securing his equipment and other historical artifacts and displaying them at a storefront at Mill No. 5 on Jackson Street.
  • February 2017 — The We Share A Common Thread Foundation Fundraiser raises $50,000, which was donated to support 80 various non-profits in the Merrimack Valley and Southern New Hampshire region.
  • April 2017 — Mark S. Cochran receives Lowell Catholic High School’s 16th Annual Bishop John R. McNamara Award to commemorate his commitment to community involvement and contribution to Catholic education.
  • April 2017 — University of Massachusetts Lowell establishes the Michelle Silveira Heart & Soul Award in honor of our Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, Michelle Silveira. The award recognizes her volunteer efforts and devotion to community involvement, and is awarded to UMass Lowell student athletes who demonstrate the same passion for giving back as Michelle.
  • April 2017 — Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union welcomes Sovanna Pouv, Executive Director of the Cambodian Mutual Assistance Association, to its Board of Directors.
  • August 2017 — Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union opens Nashua High School South branch, its third high school location.
  • September 2017 — Mark Cochran was named one of Banker & Tradesman’s 2017 Credit Union Heroes.
  • October 2017 — Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union distributed the first donations from the Steve Jones Legacy Fund to the following organizations: A Bed For Every Child, Greater Lowell YMCA, Town of Chelmsford Scholarship Committee, My Father’s House, Merrimack Valley Food Bank, Chelmsford Youth Basketball League, Catie’s Closet, Boys & Girls Club of Greater Lowell and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Lowell.
  • November 2017 — Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union implements the Infant at Work Program.
  • January 2018 – Jeanne D’Arc holds first “Casual for a Cause” day to support Humane Society for Greater Nashua. Throughout the year, Credit Union employees dress casual to support a local non-profit organization on one Tuesday each month.
  • January 2018 – After serving 30 years on the Board of Directors at Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union, George C. Eliades, Jr., Esq., Chairman of the Board, retires. The Credit Union welcomes John P. Chemaly, Owner and President of Trinity E.M.S., Inc., as the new Chairman.
  • February 2018 – Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union launches its Small Acts The Give Back initiative, where the Credit Union performs random acts of kindness throughout the local community and within its branches. Jeanne D’Arc’s first Small Act took place at Market Basket on Fletcher Street. Staff members surprised more than 100 shoppers with a Market Basket gift card and a free tote bag to assist with their grocery shopping.
  • February 2018 – The 2018 We Share A Common Thread Foundation Fundraiser raises more than $60,000 which allows the Credit Union to provide monetary support to 95 local non-profit organizations in the Merrimack Valley and Southern New Hampshire areas.
  • April 2018 – Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union pays the heating expenses of four lucky members with our Small Acts That Give Back – Pay Your Heating Bill Campaign. From February 26th – March 24th, Jeanne D’Arc heard from 78 community members who expressed why they needed assistance with their heating expenses. The Credit Union selected four entries, and paid their oil, electric, gas or propane bill up to $400.
  • May 2018 – Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union is recognized at The Warren Group’s Banking Choice Awards for being one of the top three credit unions in Massachusetts. The Credit Union received first place in Overall Quality, first place in Community Contribution and second place in Customer Service for financial institutions in the Greater Boston Area.
  • May 2018 – Mark S. Cochran receives the Home Health Foundation’s Legacy of Leading Award for his supportive efforts in demonstrating dedicated care to the health and wellness of community members.
  • May 2018 – Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union awards a total of $1,000 to four “Hometown Heroes”. From April 25th – May 25th Jeanne D’Arc gave community members the opportunity to nominate someone they know who goes above and beyond in their community. Four nominees were selected and named “Hometown Heroes”, and each received a $250 cash prize.
  • September 2018 – Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union wins 2018 Volunteer Group of the Year from Mill City Grows.
  • September 2018 – Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union wins the Excellence in Financial Education Award from the Cooperative Credit Union Association.
  • August 2018 – For the Love of Erika wins Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union’s National Nonprofit Day Campaign. The organization won a $2,018 donation from the Credit Union.
