Tablet Security: Closing a Door on Cybercriminals

You have automatic updates enabled on your phone and a strong passcode on your computer, but what about your tablet? What about your kid’s tablet? They’re not quite laptops and they’re not quite phones, and, in too many cases, they’re not very secure. Here are tips to change that:
- Set a strong passcode. Many tablets default to short PINs or simple swipe patterns. Use a complex password or long alphanumeric passcode instead.
- Keep the operating system updated. Tablet OS updates often lag behind phone updates. Install them promptly to patch security holes.
- Encrypt local storage. Some tablets don’t encrypt data by default, so enable device encryption to protect files if the tablet is lost or stolen.
- Use a reputable app store. Tablets—especially those running Android—may allow “sideloading” apps. Avoid installing from unknown sources to reduce malware risk.
- Secure “cloud sync.” Tablets often sync documents, photos, and notes automatically. Review your cloud account’s security settings and enable multifactor authentication.
- Beware of shared profiles. Some tablets support multiple user accounts or “guest” modes. Lock down administrative access so guests can’t install apps or change settings.
- Protect against physical theft. A tablet can easily disappear into a bag or pocket. Use a lock screen timeout and consider a tether or case with a lock.
- Review app permissions. Tablet-specific apps (such as drawing or media apps) may request broad access to files and hardware. Deny what’s not essential.
- Secure any accessories. Keyboards, styluses, and even cases with built-in electronics can be exploited. Only use trusted, up-to-date accessories.
- Wipe before selling or recycling. Tablets may store browser logins, saved documents, and synced email accounts. Perform a full factory reset and remove memory cards before disposal.
A good rule of thumb is that if a device can connect to the internet, it needs to be secured. Game consoles, baby monitors, smart TVs, and tablets included.
